What's VoIP?

Inexpensive, simple to install, and easy to use, VoIP is changing the way people make phone calls. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and it literally means that voice calls are sent over a network. Traditional telecommunications calls are sent over the PSTN (public switched telephone network) and while VoIP calls can also travel over the PSTN they only do so when one of the parties on the call is using the PSTN. Some VoIP calls utilize the public Internet to transport calls, while other VoIP calls may stay entirely on a private network. Today many businesses utilize VoIP within and between their offices. This can result in a significant cost savings both for internal wiring and actual telephone charges.

Since VoIP calls don’t have to utilize a traditional long distance carrier the cost to deliver long distance VoIP calls can be much less than with the PSTN. Even when calls utilize the PSTN VoIP carriers keep calls off of the PSTN for as long as possible to minimize costs. These savings can be passed directly back to you in the form of lower rates!

Since VoIP is a newer technology and a lot more competitive there aren’t as many taxes and fees involved. Most of the fees on your current phone bill are actually subsidies that go directly to the phone companies that charge you so much money every month!

While the quality of VoIP calls can be as good as PSTN calls, sometimes the quality of your network connection can affect your call quality. In addition VoIP calls are often compressed to save on network capacity and improve call reliability in limited bandwidth situations.
